Ethan's Story

Ethan was diagnosed in utero with Levo-transposition of the great arteries and a VSD. LTGA is rare of all the heart defects (about 40) it is 0.5-1% of that population. When his heart was developing it starts at as a tube and his flipped backwards so his right and left ventricles are switched. This results with the strong ventricle is pumping blood to the lungs and the weak ventricle to the body.

His cardiologist is Dr. David Saudek at CHW. He is phenomenal! Ethan had a pulmonary artery banding at 4 weeks old done by Dr. Tweddell. This surgery was to buy time to let Ethan grow.

When Ethan was 9 months old he had his Double Switch procedure. Also called a rastelli-senning. This procedure was done by Dr. Tweddell with assistance by Dr. Mitchell. At the time Dr. Tweddell had only done this procedure 13 times and he was chief of cardio-thoracic surgery. Unfortunately Ethan developed blood clots in his superior vena cava and 2 days after his big surgery he went back to the OR for his 3rd open heart procedure. He had a Glenn procedure on 9-26-14 by Dr. Mitchell.

We are forever grateful for Ethan's cardiologist, Dr. Saudek, his surgeons, Dr. Tweddell and Dr. Mitchell, Dr. Nancy Ghanayem (chief of the CICU), and all the other doctors, nurses, therapists, and other staff at CHW who have taken care of Ethan.
